Recently this science fiction story, written by English writer John Wyndham has sparked my interest. Triffids are carnivorous intellectual plants, capable of a form of speech, and using a poisonous sting to stun or kill its prey. English scientist Bill Mason, afflicted by Triffid venom early in the story, awakes in hospital to find most of the human race has been struck blind by a meteor shower, which was being watched by people all around the world. Finding novelist Josella Playton, they realise that the encased Triffids being studied, all around the world, can now escape. They together plan to find a way to stop them before they spore, or the world is lost. I was rather more interested in the BBC drama version earlier this week, in which Triffid oil is being used as a fuel substitute to solve global warming, a solar storm is what blinds most of the world, and Jo Playton is depicted as a nationally known presenter.
